Popular branding advice you need to breakup with immediately

Branding is everything when it comes to building a successful business—but some of the advice out there? Totally toxic and needs to be dumped..

And listen, I get it. Making branding decisions can feel a lot like my dating life back in the day. I had this unfortunate tendency to choose guys solely based on their sense of humor. Nice? Nope. Financially stable? Not even close. Ambitious? Not a chance.

I chose them soley based on good looks and humor. (and honestly looking back, the "good looks" part is even up for debate). What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good sense of humor. And dating the "funny" guy also meant that I had "fun" times. In theory.

But here’s the thing—every single one of those relationships had something in common: they weren’t actually right for me. Not even a little. Which meant they always led to a tough breakup when I finally realized that my time and energy were being wasted on something that wasn’t getting me any closer to the relationship I truly wanted.

And branding? It’s the same deal.

Some strategies seem like the “fun” or “right” choice in the moment—maybe they’re trendy, maybe they feel like the easy route, maybe some “branding expert” on TikTok swears by them. But just like my dating history, they can end up leading you nowhere. No forward movement. No growth. Just a lot of wasted effort.

So, let’s talk about the branding advice you need to break up with immediately—before it holds you back from building the business you actually want. 👀

Today, I’m setting the record straight. Here are 3 popular branding mistakes that need to be left on read immediately (and what you should do instead). Buckle up. 😏🔥

"Branding is Just a Logo and Colors"

The word's “branding” and “just” simply don't belong in the same sentence. Period. Branding is not just a look—it’s an experience. A beautiful aesthetic means nothing if your messaging is confusing, your website is a nightmare to navigate, or your customer experience is lacking.

Think of branding as the whole package:

  • How your brand looks (visual identity)

  • How your brand sounds (voice + messaging)

  • How your brand makes people feel (experience + customer journey)

If you get all of these right, your brand will stand out for the right reasons.

"Pick Your Brand Colors Based on Your Favorite Colors"

I know we all want to love the way our business looks and it's easy to think the next logical step is to choose brand colors based on our own personal preferences BUT in all reality, your business is about what your customer is drawn to.

Now, I'm not talking about your customer's favorite colors either.

Choose colors based on the feeling and positioning you want your brand to have. Think about color psychology and what will attract your ideal audience.

  • Luxury brands → Neutrals, muted tones with a signature pop color

  • Bold, high-energy brands → Vibrant, saturated colors

  • Wellness brands → Earthy, calming hues

Your brand colors should resonate with your audience, not just match your favorite sweater.

"If I don't appeal to everyone, I'll lose out on business"

This is the fastest way to end up with a brand that has zero personality—a bland, forgettable mess that speaks to no one in particular.

Do this instead:

Get specific. Niche down. Know exactly who your dream customer is and create a brand that feels like it was made for them.

  • If you’re speaking to everyone, you’re speaking to no one.

  • Be polarizing if you need to. The right audience will be drawn to you because of it.

Long story short, if you've been following any of this advice, it's time to take a second look at your current branding.

Like I said – No shame if you’ve followed some of these (we’ve all been there). But if your branding isn’t truly working for you (and by working I mean leading to consistent sales), it might be time for a refresh.

Need help crafting a strategic, elevated brand that actually connects with your dream customers? I got you.
